We have recently taken a deep dive into the world of pickling and we are here for it! We’ve always been a fan of all things pickled but never understood how easy it really is to do it yourself. Pickled red onions was the perfect recipe to start experiment with; and after many trials, we nailed it! Since developing this recipe, pickled red onions have become a staple in our small kitchen, and we always have at least one batch (honestly, it’s more like 3) in our fridge. Once you make this recipe yourself, we’re telling you, you will be just like us and need a jar on deck at all times!

With ONLY 5 ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen and made in less than 15 mins, this is a recipe everyone needs to try. The brine quickly transforms the red onions from bitter and raw tasting to tangy & sweet. Besides being so incredibly delicious, the pickled onions’ final product is a vibrant purpley-pink, making it easy to add a dash of colour to your favourite meals. Some of our classic ways to use pickled red onions are: on salad, piled on sandwiches, a taco topping, added to bowls… what we’re trying to say is they can be added on EVERYTHING!

The pickled onions we’re sharing are the perfect beginner pickling recipe; it’s a simple, quick pickle that results in a final product you will seriously be obsessed with. They complement dishes with their sweet and tangy flavour while adding fun colour and crunch! We’ve gotten our friends and families HOOKED on these bad boys and it’s hard for us to get away with making them a meal without including them.

This recipe is the perfect addition to pretty much any meal you can think of. Once you make these quick pickled red onions, you’re going to want to have a jar on hand at all times!

Ingredients

1 large red onion, thinly sliced
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1.5 tablespoons maple syrup
1.5 teaspoons pickling salt
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Combine water, both vinegars, maple syrup, and salt in a small pot over medium heat and bring to a boil. When the salt has dissolved, add the sliced onion to a heat proof bowl or jar and pour the liquid over top of the onions so they are are submerged under the liquid.
  2. Let the mixture sit at room temperature for one hour and then add the child flakes and stir them in. If the onions are in a bowl, transfer them to a jar or container, tightly seal, and place in the fridge.
  3. Pile them on any meals you want from salads to tacos and store them for up to 2 weeks (but we bet they won’t last that long!).

Notes

  1. The red pepper flakes don’t add much spice to the onions, just a good kick of flavour, but you can leave them out if you want.
